I have a confession to make:
I’ve been fighting with my body since I was 14 years old.
Why?
Because I felt like she (my body) was the enemy, because it made me hungry and stored fat when all I wanted was to be able to eat less and lose weight.
You see, I’m not one of those lucky (and may I say sometimes irritating ;)) persons who can eat all they want without putting on an ounce.
No, that’s not my case… AT ALL.
The truth is, there were times when I felt I would put on weight just by thinking of eating dessert ;) (actually maybe I did because I felt stressed when I “couldn’t” eat it and stress makes your body store fat…).
The problem is:
I love to eat, I like to eat a lot and I feel like eating when I’m anxious which in my case, happens a lot of times.
Another problem is I hate diets and feeling hungry (I get really angry).
And I adore desserts (well, no so much nowadays unless it’s chocolate something…).
Here’s a bit of my weight story:
It all started when I was 14 years old and I liked my body – I didn’t think about her, really!
Around that time I moved to Macau (China) with my family and maybe because of that, I started to eat a lot of sweet stuff, every day. I gained a lot of weight very quickly until I had 8 kgs (17 pounds) more than my ideal weight. And I started hating my body. Boys would call me fat at school which made me feel even worse…
I already loved fashion and read a lot of magazines so decided to check some models proportions and decide about the weight I “should” have. I noticed they all had the same difference between height and weight, which was under my ideal weight, of course… But I decided that if a model could do it, so could I!
And I went on my search for how to lose weight. I ended up losing 16 Kgs (35 pounds) and reached my goal of weighing the same as a model. By then I was really thin and my parents got worried. And so did I. So I decided to regain some weight. I regained 6 Kgs (13 pounds). And I felt great about my body again. I was 15 (or 16).
Some years later, when I was in college, and stopped smoking (yes, I smoked for 2 years, in case you’re wondering ;)) I gained a lot of weight, again. But this time I decided I needed to do something different so I wouldn’t keep gaining and losing lots of weight.
In my search for how to lose weight since I was 14 years old, I read a great deal of books and learned a lot. I did many different things and tried a lot of diets that didn’t work…
Finally my mother took me to an amazing doctor who changed the way I eat for good. He gave me a healthy and balanced diet meal plan and told me I had to lose weight slowly following that plan. When I asked him:
“And when I stop the diet, what do I do?”
His answer made me realize what I had been doing wrong until that moment:
“You don’t stop, you eat this way for the rest of your life!”
And I ended up adapting the meal plan so I could eat whatever I wanted and still keep the same weight.
With all the previous learning and this new diet I finally found an awesome solution that helped me keep my weight the same for the last 20 years.
The last surprise was when I turned 40 and I noticed a big change in my body – a stronger tendency to gain weight – and I had to change things a bit so I’m still able to eat like a “normal” person ;). I learned about body detoxing and other methods to maintain a balanced weight (for example, looking for pleasure beyond food, savouring everything we eat, and so on).
In conclusion, it wasn’t easy, but my struggle led me to a great solution. And it’s based on proportions and portions.
What?
You know, the main problem is most of us eat too much without realising it, because we’re used to big portions and think that they’re normal…. so we need to reeducate our mind, eyes and stomach to eat and be satisfied with smaller portions (but not too small though… as I said, I like to eat a LOT :)).
Now you’re probably thinking:
“Well, that’s not my problem because I don’t eat that much at all.”
That’s how I used to think until I did the essential thing you need to do if you want to lose weight and maintain it: writing down everything you eat for a period of time and seeing what you actually are eating every day!
So here’s a challenge for you:
During this week, and starting today, write down everything you eat.
E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G :).
I bet you’ll be surprised when you realize that you’re eating a lot more than you thought!
If you don’t believe me, try it, and next week write a comment below telling me what you found out.
