One of the best ways is to stay with our feelings. Feel the feelings instead of trying to avoid them, instead of getting distracted with something else – like watching TV or eating something.
It may seem strange: What does that mean – staying with your feelings?
You just feel what you’re feeling. Instead of getting distracted, stay with the feeling. And you can even try to intensify it and feel where it is in your body.
You can ask where it is, see if it has a color. It helps you relate to the feeling and feel more.
The feeling will continue to be there, if you try to avoid it. It goes into the unconscious but it continues to influence you.
So it’s really important to stay with the feeling instead of trying to avoid it.
And then what can happen is that stories appear. The ego can begin to tell us stories and a narrative associated with that feeling.
For example, if I was anxious about making this video, I would start thinking: “No one will like it, what if it doesn’t look good?”. And we can see that these are interpretations of the world that we made, that are linked to our past and are not even real.
And we can create a distance from these stories and not be hooked to them. The idea is just to feel the feeling more and it helps to overcome it and integrate it.
And that is the idea.
To feel the feeling, not to be attached to the stories of the ego. Be the observer of the stories.
It helps you feel calmer. And you’ll have more power because you won’t let your emotions control you or influence you. You won’t try to avoid them.
Another thing you can do is meditate.
It may seem that very complicated. At first, I didn’t think I could do it, because… “How can I stay still for such a long time? I’ll get fed up.”
But it’s easier if you start to create the habit. You can start with only 5 minutes and don’t make many rules. It may just be sitting with your back straight or lying down and watching your thoughts.
Or you can use guided meditations, an app like the Calm app, or 1 Giant Mind.
Meditating helps you to be more aware of your thoughts and emotions. Instead of being in a more reactive state, you start to be much more aware of what’s going on.
And then you can work with those thoughts and emotions instead of just trying to avoid them… which doesn’t work.
